First trailer arrives for highly-anticipated Pixar sequel

Finding Nemo is one of Pixar Animation Studio's most commercial and critical successes and ranks as their second highest-grossing film at the box office. Therefore, the pressure is on for the sequel, Finding Dory, to match its predecessor.

In Finding Nemo, Pixar were triumphant in what they accomplished visually and the ocean setting allowed the studio to fully display the capabilities of 3D animation at the time of its release in 2003. So, over a decade on, expectation will be high, but Pixar's visual achievements so far have never failed to be less than outstanding.

The tale of clownfish Marlin's search for his son after he is captured by a scuba diver, with the help of Dory, a fish who has amnesia, is a set up that provided Finding Nemo with an adventure full of drama, despair, humour and hope. Marlin's seemingly impossible task was one that gripped viewers with its well-executed story and memorable characters, so it is therefore not surprising that the sequel will mirror the first film's ocean journey theme.

The trailer for the new film was debuted by Ellen DeGeneres, who provides the voice for Dory, on her eponymous TV talk show and has just been released online. It features Dory recalling snippets of information about her family, which is fresh territory for the filmmakers, as this was not covered in Finding Nemo. The plot will centre around the attempt to find her family in the great wide ocean - a premise which has the potential to be fraught with peril and excitement. The filmmakers are once again making creative use of Dory's amnesia, as the questionable accuracy over her recollections will almost certainly add suspense and comedy to the story.

The sequel will provide viewers with more beautifully-rendered ocean scenery and we are treated to glimpses of this in the new trailer. There is also the possibility of the return of much-loved characters, such as the surfer dude turtles and the dentist's fish tank gang.

We will have to wait until next summer to find out if Dory succeeds in her quest and if Pixar manage to produce a film that will delight audiences as much as Finding Nemo, as the film is scheduled for release in June 2016.
