Stay Safe, Students.

If you’ve listened to, watched or read any form of news this week, you’ll know the name Karen Buckley. Karen, a student in Glasgow, went missing on Sunday morning after a night out with friends at a nightclub in Glasgow’s West End.

She was seen on CCTV leaving the club with a man, a 21 year old who told police they had driven to his flat but she had left at around 4am on Sunday. It is believed that the same man is in court today (April 17th) charged with her murder after her remains were found at a farm eight miles outside of Glasgow City Centre.

In light of this horrific story, I wanted to share some student safety tips for nights out with you.

  • Keep an eye on your drinks. It’s not just girls who can have their drinks spiked. If you put your drink down or it leaves your sight, get a new one. Many drugs which are used to spike drinks are tasteless and odourless and usually endetectable until they have an effect on the victim.

  • Always let someone know where you’re going. If you’re leaving the club, either to go home, to another club or home with someone, let a trusted friend or family member know where you’ll be.

  • Never walk anywhere alone. If you’re going home alone, call a taxi or arrange to be picked up be someone you trust.

  • Know when to say no. If you don’t feel comfortable going home with someone or if you don’t want to talk to them, know when to say no to them. Don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable with. Similarly, if someone tells you no, don’t try to force or persuade them.

  • Be aware of your friends. If you haven’t seen one of your friends who are out with you for a while, don’t assume they’re okay. Your friend may be in trouble and it could be up to you to help them.
