The Sweet Side of Vegan Life

First let me say what a great response I have received from the intro article. I am so happy there is so much interest in not only the love of animals, the environment but your own health as well. People went out and watched Vegucated and loved it. Thank you! I’ll leave my email at the bottom because I won’t be on campus a lot over summer, if you have any questions just pop me a message.

This one is going to be short and definitely sweet. I am going to tell you all about the vegan food you already eat! Plus a great summer recipe from the Vegan Zombie.

Now for the sweet stuff. PETA UK has been kind enough to have a list of vegan items you probably accidently already buy!

Sweets and (my favourite) Chocolates: Starbursts (originals), Millions, Haribo (but only Rainbow Twists, Sour Rainbow Strips and Sour Rainbow Twist), Flying Saucers, Love Hearts, Cadbury Bourneville Plain Chocolate, and Green & Blacks (but only Dark Chocolate, Hazelnut & Currant, Maya Gold, Ginger, Espresso, Spiced Chilli, Lemon and Mint). These are just to name a few!

Clearly some crisps have milk or fish or something weird so here are a few safe ones: Walkers - (very popular brand) Salt & Vinegar, Ready Salted, Prawn Cocktail, Worcester Sauce, McCoy’s - Ultimate Sizzling BBQ Chicken, Ultimate Chargrilled Steak & Peri Peri, Kettle Chips (my favourite) Sea Salt & Vinegar, Lightly Salted, Sea Salt & Crushed Black Peppercorns.

Biscuits!! Tea Time Snacks anyone?! Lotus Original Caramelised Biscuits, Jammie Dodgers, Hobnob’s Choc Chip, Fox’s Party Rings and Oreos.

Sometimes you want to spread the love or just something, so why not try these: Lotus Smooth Caramelised Biscuit Spread, Sun-Pat Choc-a-nut Peanut Spread, Morrison’s M savers Chocolate Hazelnut Spread or Tesco’ Bourbon Spread.

If you are in the mood to bake a cake try one of Betty Crocker’s cake mixes. They are great and you will be surprised at which ones are vegan. Super Moist, Devil’s Food, Vanilla, and Chocolate Swirl. You can also get some already made from the Co-operative. Most of the donuts and cakes from their bakery are vegan! Just read the label.

Now just remember to double check the labels because in this ever changing world we live in ingredients can change. So always remember to check. There are lots of vegan friendly apps like Happy Cow to help guide you to restaurants, shops and even hotels. Websites are all over like the Vegan Society and if you join you can get discounts at places like Holland & Barrett.

Now with summer here I leave you with a very versatile meal from the Vegan Zombie, who also have a You Tube channel and cookbook. This is a taco recipe but the jackfruit can be put into a bun which is equally as nice or on its own with vegetables or rice. Jackfruit can be purchased fresh or in a can but only get the one that is in Brine NOT Syrup. They can be found at most Chinese Supermarkets or stores.

Vegan Zombie Pineapple BBQ Jackfruit.

Don’t forget if you have any questions contact me at m.watson@wlv.ac.uk

and I will try to help in any way I can.

Now if you still don’t think there is a link between food and environment and are still researching the issues here is a great environmental film. Cowspiracy. Have a look and see what you can do to help save the planet one bite at a time.

Until next time, don’t eat too many sweets and remember it is OK to be the vegan in the room.
