Wolverhampton Celebrates Armistice Day

As we all know, or at least most should, Wednesday was Armistice Day, 11/11/15 marked the 97th anniversary of the end of WW1 and the folks of Wolverhampton turned out in force to commemorate the many lives that were lost on the battlefield during that war and all since.

Over one million lives were lost during the Great War, which is roughly the population of Birmingham, so to see many hundreds turn out to brave the cold was truly stunning. The service, lasting about half an hour, began with a march by army cadets and veterans wielding regimental flags. A short speech was given before the Last Post was sounded and a two minute silence commenced, after which the city’s Mayor Cllr Ian Brookfield laid down the first wreath upon the Cenotaph followed by the Deputy Mayor. Giving a short speech, the Mayor reminded everyone of the importance of remembering our fallen soldiers and that if it wasn’t for their sacrifice, we wouldn’t have the life we have today.

We are blessed to have the opportunity to take part in these services, many towns and cities across the country have not been able to honour the fallen the way we have this past week in Wolverhampton due to many policing cuts and lack of legacy to hold and organise the events. We are so fortunate to have the lives we have today, we should be grateful for the chance to live our lives the way we do. I thank the Wolverhampton branch of the Royal British Legion for a stunning ceremony.
