When it comes to buying clothes for a teenage boy in the style they like and what suits them you would think would be quite an easy process. I have found this not to be the case. There are many shops out there that cater for all styles and age range but not with appropriate sizing. When you are trying to buy jeans and trousers for an 18 year old who is nearly 6” but only has a 26” waist it becomes a long and frustrating time. My son, whom I have just mentioned is quite tall and I think is still growing but his waist is very small. I have spent many hours shopping with him to find jeans and trousers that will fit him comfortably but this has just been a nightmare. In shops local to me I have had to buy these items that are 2” to big on the waist for him as they do not sell or stock jeans and trousers under a 28” waist. Hence he has to use a belt to keep his jeans up. His legs are very skinny so even skinny jeans hang on him.
I have now found River Island is the only store that I can get jeans from in the right size for him but this is at a greater cost than other shops such as Top Man who’s smallest waist available is 26”. In the fashion industry today, fashion has taken into account the larger people like myself in their designs and sizing but not for the extra thin males out there. I am sure if I was to shop in top Designer stores I would be able to find clothes in his size but being a student and having a family to support this is out of my reach so I have to look at the cheaper shops for all of our clothes. To buy clothes in his size waist means the legs are far too short so the only option is to buy a larger size and use a belt, but even this doesn’t look good with shirts as you can see the jeans gathered at the waist.
I also find that finding shirts for him (he prefers shirts to T shirts) a bit of a drama, as again being very thin, to find a shirt in the right size means it is shorter in the length, so all his shirts as well have to be the next size up so they have the length and look a little too big around the chest. I think it’s a shame that industry does not take into account the extra thin males in the world as I see more and more teenagers around these days that are built just like my son.
