With a UK tour underway and a visit to The Lighthouse at Wolverhampton on Friday 6th March, Gina Yashere spoke to The Thread about her upcoming tour, what it’s like to see your own DVD in stores and the differences between comedy in the US and the UK.
Interview by Calum Archibald

With your new tour beginning, what are the ups and downs of touring?
“I enjoy it but I do get tired of the 3* hotels, haha. The shows are great but the constant travelling is tiring, the one place where I don’t mind it is Asia, I could definitely do an extra couple of weeks in Thailand and China!”
What is your favourite thing about being a comedienne?
“Talking! I love talking, and waking up whenever I want, that’s great. It’s good fun.”
How different is it doing comedy in the UK and the US?
“Honestly? Not much. The only thing is I feel more relaxed when I’m back in the UK, it feels like taking my bra off at the end of a long day, you know? It’s just what I know, I love comedy and it’s the same wherever you are, but nothing beats coming back home.”
How do you come up with fresh material?
“Everyone works differently, personally I work like a conveyer belt, I come up with jokes and stories and add one on to the front and one at the end comes off. I’m constantly testing out new material and if it doesn’t work then that goes, it’s all about keeping fresh. My style is constantly evolving, I’m always finding interesting things, improving and keeping current.”
Do you enjoy coming to Wolverhampton?
“To be honest with you I’ve only been a couple of times, I’ve always gone to Birmingham, but whenever I’ve been it’s been great. That’s why I decided to come here on this tour, I thought I’ve done Birmingham a few times why don’t I do Wolverhampton this time.”
Does being a comedian give you a licence to be eccentric?
“I’ve always been eccentric but it’s a great excuse! People are covered in piercings, tattoos and that’s their right, I’m an artist! If people ever say to me ‘Gina you’re crazy’, I’m just like yeah I’m supposed to be, I’m an artist!”
We asked Gina to give the final word on why you should come see her tour:
“It will be hilarious! I’m like your funniest mate but even funnier, you’ll hear stuff you won’t hear anywhere else, it’s a great night out!”
