Underground metallers lay seige

This months treat saw ‘At Dawn we Attack’ take to the stage for the Teen Detonation night at the Wulfrun Hall.

By Gareth J Morris

With no idea what I was getting myself into and the band itself having formed only two months ago - this was to be their third show. There were only two possible outcomes; either this was going to be a success or a complete train wreck.

Having been a fan of metal for almost half of my life I thought I had heard and seen it all. Oh how wrong I was.

The lights dimmed as we were met with a clash of drums, bass and guitar thundering in chaotic harmony to the opening song ‘Capitulate’. Within seconds the music had caught the attention of the strays in the hall and the masses moved to the stage, curious but unconfident of what they were seeing.

The energy coming from the band was like a thick blanket drifting from the stage and by the second song the crowd had begun to move. Bryan’s deep growling vocals backed up by the mayhem of the rest of the band proved these guys were no amateurs.

As the show progressed, covers such as Stamping Ground’s ‘Officer Down’ and Devil Driver’s ‘Hold Back the Day’ thundered out across the hall with guest vocals from a fan who, in his own right could take to the stage to perform.

Energy continued to flow and I found it increasingly difficult to take pictures as I went from head banging to trying to stop myself jumping around like a maniac. A little hate moshing erupted in the pit but soon died down as one lad got floored.

The last song of the evening saw drummer Chris and guitarist James swapping their respective instruments for probably my favourite and the most harmonious song of the night with the band performing alexisonfire’s ‘This Could be Anywhere in the World’.

‘At Dawn we Attack’ are truly a breath of fresh air forcing a new and invigorating vibe into the West Midlands underground metal scene.
