Approximately 400 students who were studying for exams fled or tried to hide when the gunman entered the Strozier Library, in the heart of the campus, and opened fire at around 12:30am on Thursday, wounding three people.

An Officer responded to an emergency call and confronted the gunman near the entrance. It is believed that the gunman fired a shot and police returned fire, fatally wounding him, according to Tallahassee police spokesman David Northway said during a press briefing.

He said the suspect was armed with a handgun and was apparently alone.

University President John Thrasher called the shooting and isolated incident and said authorities had assured him there was no further threat.

Of the three students who were shot, two were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare Hospital. The other was treated at the scene. One of them is said to be in a critical condition.

Classes were cancelled on Thursday and the school is offering counselling services to those who feel they need it.

The all-clear was announced at 4am after students were evacuated and searched.

Officials have since named the gunman as Myron May, a lawyer who had graduated from FSU in 2005.
