The Muppets return... again - Film Review

According to the opening number of Muppets Most Wanted– the sequel is never as good as the original. But exactly which of the eight originals were they talking about?

By A-Jay Hackett

Mix our felt ‘n’ fur hero’s and heroines in with a criminal mastermind who loves to blow things up – yes we’re talking about another frog – and you’re sure to get a crazy plot. Clementine, an escaped convict who likes to knit when he’s stressed, impersonates Kermit so badly that naturally, nobody notices.

Muppets Most Wanted rekindles the edgy comedy the Muppets are famous for, while managing to squeeze in every accent possible – from Russian to Irish, they badly impersonate them all. Not forgetting Tina Fey’s frighteningly convincing role as a Russian prison guard who falls hard for our favourite green protagonist.

Cameos ranging all the way from the Lady Gaga to Danny Trejo bring spark back to a classic collection of characters, and if you never thought you’d hear Ray Liotta demand to be allowed to sing boys to men – think again.

Full of pastiche and famous Muppet shenanigans, as promised the Muppets are spiralled into chaos within minutes. Ricky Gervais’ surprisingly layered character softens Gervais’ pessimistic nature while old members of the Muppet family are re-claimed to fame – including Kermit’s forgotten nephew, Robin the Frog.

Okay, so the charming optimism is not always present as it was in 2010’s reboot The Muppets – but to the films credit, optimism is hard to find when you’re just a frog trapped in a Russian prison having been framed as the number one most wanted criminal.

You can still catch Muppets Most Wanted in selected cinemas if you hurry. If you are a lover of all things Muppets I recommend you don’t miss this one, or any of its eight predecessors.
